"Victorian dams, red kite feeding, and mirror-like reservoirs in a secret valley"

About

The Elan Valley in mid-Wales, just over the English border, is one of the most dramatic and least-visited landscapes in Britain. A chain of six Victorian stone dams creates a series of stunning reservoirs surrounded by rugged moorland. The valley is famous for its thriving red kite population — the species was nearly extinct in Britain but successfully reintroduced here. Daily feeding sessions bring dozens of kites swooping low overhead. On winter evenings, the stone dam walls are illuminated in a spectacular sound and light show.
